Top tips for career progression in the care industry

When you’re working in the care sector, it’s not just about being a care worker – there’s so much more to it.

Like in any industry, there’s always room for progression and working your way up in your chosen field, exploring the other roles that go hand in hand with what you’re already doing. In care, you can start off as a care worker and before you know it you could be managing a care home and looking after a team of staff, it’s just having the confidence to get there.
Here are some of our tips to help you progress in your care career:
Show willingness to improve
‘Familiarity breeds complacency’ – it’s easy to become complacent in any job, you know it well, you’re good at what you do – but why not be better? Make that choice to go above and beyond and show your employer that you’re ready for a step up.
Learn new skills
There’s an abundance of different qualifications in the care industry, from learning the essential skills you need to look after people, to more specific qualifications such as leadership skills and business administration. The more qualified you are, the more likely it will be that you can progress to a higher role.
Become a leader
Show your boss that you’re capable of leading a team, it can be as simple as showing a new team member around and making sure they’re comfortable with any new tasks. It’s important to show that you have the right attitude and willingness to help your colleagues.
Talk to your boss
If you don’t ask, you don’t get! Have a chat with your boss and talk about ways in which you can progress in your role, if they have any opportunities to shadow a higher member of staff, or if there are any learning courses available. They may be able to give you some advice about climbing up the career ladder.
